With a few days to myself around New Year’s Day 2023, I decided to book a last-minute trip to Music City, USA. Gotta use all those flight credits and points I’ve accrued over the last year! I loved how Holston House felt like I was staying in a downtown studio apartment instead of a typical hotel.

I enjoy boutique hotels among the more “independent collection” brands offered by the major chains, and some of my most memorable stays have been within Hyatt’s Unbound Collection, Hilton’s Curio Collection, and Marriott’s Design Hotels. I’ve managed to check in extremely early to multiple Hyatt properties, but struck out at the Holston House. I’d feared this would be the case, arriving at a boutique hotel on New Year’s Day. The front desk took my number and assured they’d text me when the room was ready. I dropped my bags and headed out in search of a cup of coffee before walking to church, which filled the remainder of my morning.

The exterior art deco touches are matched by its interior, with neither being overly flashy. Rugs hide the loud checkerboard tile, and the lighting has a more industrial look. Due to its small size and covert placement, this is one of the most popular self-love tattoo designs. Any finger can be used for the tattoo, but it’s best to pick one with plenty of room for it to express your personality. To be chosen as one of the top tattoo designers, a designer has to have a record of communicating effectively with clients and delivering designs that they’re happy to receive. Reputation goes a long way on 99designs, and it’s one of the things a designer needs to get to the top of their category. The cost of a knuckle tattoo will depend on the size, complexity, and location of the design. Generally, knuckle tattoos range between $50 and $200.

It’s like our bodies are made for these tattoos; they deliver a perfect message about the truth. It’s not about repressing bad feelings or appearing to be cheerful all of the time when you’re trying to live a happy life. A happiness tattoo is a unique mental health self-love tattoo that can express a lot in just one word.
How Much To Tip Tattoo Artists: A Helpful Guide
It’s important to know these practice tattoos probably won’t be your best work. However, a lot of artists consider tattooing yourself to be a rite of passage when you’re starting out (and we’ve all done it). There are a few things that you should avoid after getting a self love tattoo.
Wildly popular amongst those with a DIY mindset, self made tattoo designs are a great way of showing the world just how independent you are. Not only do self made tattoos give off a bold meaning and high sense of self, but they also can be done in just about any font, and are very easy for artists to customize. In fact, many “self made” individuals will even add in their favorite colors or quotes to help customize the tattoo and better display their personality.

This calligraphy may be encased by the region’s distinct cartographical boundaries for extra pizzazz. There are also plenty of local athletic associations and sports teams that can lend their likeness to the presentation. This kind of emblazonment allows men to revel in personal patriotism while connecting with a devilishly handsome exterior. Surprisingly, loving yourself — and by that, we mean really and absolutely accepting ourselves — is one of the most difficult things in life.
Barbed wire is said to be dangerous as it can cause bleeding by cutting the skin or even death. Such tattoos remind us to cross a fence which could be painful. Such tattoos’ unique designs have a very great message. Bold colors like yellow and black are used to create such an amazing design. In black and red, large letters, the fingers create two four letter words, ‘SELF MADE’. You gain self-worth and self-confidence as a result of loving yourself, and you feel more optimistic overall.

It can be hard to ignore the pain of the needle, which makes a lot of people not go deep enough in the skin while tattooing themselves. You’ll naturally want to pull back a bit, so pay close attention that your needle depth is right. Tattooing freehand is incredibly difficult, and something you shouldn’t try to do until you’re several years into your career. In comparison, getting a tattoo on the knuckle would be more painful than any other body part as the hands and the fingers have more nerve endings than other parts of the body. They can be perfect reminders of what you pass to reach this glorious point in life and that life is a journey of progress without a final destination. Either way, self-love tattoos have different meanings, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at someone else’s designs online for inspiration. That’s why we’ve gathered a powerful collection of self-love tattoos to inspire that little affirmation you might want to carry everywhere with you permanently. Although it has been said a thousand times before, it doesn’t make it less accurate — self-esteem starts with loving yourself, first and foremost.
It’s hard on the body and can slash any chance at a work-life balance if you’re doing them back to back. Most tattoo artists agree that getting a Bare-knuckle tattoo stings more than most other parts of the body. However, the pain depends on the person and also the skill of the tattoo artist or the tattoo design. Someone with a higher pain tolerance might not feel much pain while getting a hand tattoo. A good artist isn’t necessarily a good tattoo designer.

The black ink used here is very apt for an occult tattoo like this. Other than the barbed wire and swallows, there are four symbols tattooed on each knuckle like the heart, spade, flower, skull, a guitar head and some more symbols. Each portrait tattoo is different from the next — there are various styles and levels of detail. Not all portrait tattoos are memorials and they don’t always have a sad story attached to them. Oftentimes they can be odes to people who are still here.
It’s easier to tear or cut the skin with a small liner (like a 3 or 5 round liner). However, most beginner tattoo machines don’t have the power to push larger needle groupings (like a 14 round liner). Sticking to something in-between (like a 9 round liner) might be a good choice for your first tattoo on yourself. Which tattoo machine is right for you will depend on your personal preferences and what you find comfortable. However, we recommend using a pen machine for most beginners. They’re generally more comfortable to work with, since they aren’t back-heavy like a coil or rotary machine.
At the same time, the jasmine tattoo symbolizes love, beauty, and sensuality, representing self-care and self-respect. Roses represent love, beauty, passion, courage, honor, and devotion. As a new tattoo artist, tattooing yourself can be intimidating, especially if it’s your first tattoo on human skin.

Following a vegan diet, the chef-owner said, is no longer enough to combat climate change, so the new iteration of Sage will focus on sourcing and proselytizing regenerative farming practices. That, along with years of post-pandemic financial losses, moved Engelhart to introduce beef, bison, cheese and eggs from regenerative farms into her Echo Park, Culver City and Pasadena restaurants. Vegetarians and vegans often get left out of the ramen conversation, but that doesn’t need to be the case.
That topic first caught her attention more than a decade ago via a TED Talk by author and agricultural consultant Graeme Sait, which touched on soil degradation and studies linking it to climate change. It sent her on a years-long mission to dive into regenerative agriculture, a term with no one-size-fits-all definition that could apply to a number of farming practices. It often encapsulates closed-loop soil and feeding systems that offset and capture carbon, usually relying on a number of animals, natural fertilization and other factors to improve the land. If you’re downtown, Ramen Hood inside Grand Central Market is an excellent option for vegans and non-vegans alike. The least traditional bowl on the list, Ramen Hood’s broth is made by simmering shiitake mushrooms, kelp, white miso, and roasted sunflower seeds. Their chewy, slightly curly noodles were perfectly-cooked and satisfying to eat, but the real star ingredient was their treatment of oyster mushrooms. With a composed, well-balanced broth that's not too rich, and sporting firm, high-quality noodles, it's a very good Tsujita competitor for Hakata-style tonkotsu. What’s different about Killer Noodle is its homage to the spicy, Chinese-inflected tantanmen. With sesame- and pepper-laden noodles, the ramen is served as a noodle soup or “dry” on a platter. According to Engelhart — who operates Sage with her husband, chef-owner Elias Sosa — in years past the restaurants would do $7 million in annual business.

Fried eggs and carne asada can be added to existing menu items. Additionally, a new initiative to remove seed oils from the restaurants will mean a switch to nut-based vegan cheeses.

House-made ultra rich and creamy chicken broth slow-cooked with whole ingredients. Curly noodles topped with Tatsu Egg, flash fried onions, scallions and yuzu kosho paste. Gone are the days when you could score a hearty serving of ramen for under $10, but if you want a bowl that won’t break the bank, Shin-Sen-Gumi in Little Tokyo is famous for its Hakata-style ramen. They use a pork tonkotsu broth that takes three days to prepare and a signature straight, thin noodle. I prefer my ramen on the firmer side, so I appreciate that Shin-Sen-Gumi lets you select the desired firmness of your noodles. This ramen offering from the folks behind Torihei izakaya feels very much like a neighborhood ramenya in Japan, featuring an excellent tsukemen that's full of fish funk to go along with intense porkiness.

One of LA’s most creative ramen shops comes from Top Chef winner Ilan Hall. To make the Grand Central Market stall’s signature vegan broth, Hall takes umami-rich ingredients like konbu and shiitake mushrooms and combines it with roasted sunflower seeds and white miso. The result is a rich broth that’s as good as a traditional porky one; a vegan “egg” tops every bowl. While Engelhart said the decision is partially a financial one, the larger factor is promoting regenerative farming and more ecologically sustainable practices.

This tsukemen specialist took over sister restaurant Aizen Udon, which moved to the Little Tokyo Marketplace a few blocks over. Tsukemen Aizen’s deluxe offering serves thinly shaved pork in a flower-like formation, along with a mound of thick noodles, spinach, lotus root, and boiled eggs. The star — a side bowl of fishy, umami-riddled dipping broth — coats every dipped noodle with an explosion of salty, fatty flavor. This Orange County ramen shop recently expanded to Gardena, with a stall inside the Tokyo Central Market serving tsukemen and ramen. While the disposable bowls are an unfortunate aspect of this casual outlet, the specialty of miso-based broth — either tamer white miso or more aggressive red miso — brings a rounded sweetness and deep umami flavor. Her brother, Ryland Engelhart, co-founded regenerative-farming nonprofit Kiss the Ground; Mollie Engelhart serves as director of its board.
Both the tonkotsu ramen and tsukemen are among the best versions available in LA. The broth and noodles are nearly perfect, with a strong seafood umami to round the soup out. This diminutive ramen shop is the best place for Japanese noodles on the Westside.

In 2018 she and her husband bought a family farm and started fighting food waste, transporting the compostable byproduct from her restaurants to their farm and placing it back into the soil. After selling their family farm in California, they moved to Texas and built Sovereignty Ranch, which also hosts workshops for practices such as homesteading and dome building. Restaurants have opted to include meat and dairy on menus in recent years, including Hot Tongue and Burgerlords, citing financial viability. If you want a classic, hearty bowl of ramen and don’t mind waiting, Daikokuya is a staple in Little Tokyo. Daikokuya’s tonkotsu ramen is probably what you’d imagine if you were asked to think of a bowl of ramen. The slightly curly egg noodles paired with a thick tonkatsu soup base and tender chashu are the epitome of comfort food.
Tsujita’s thick and delightfully chewy noodles are served chilled with warm, gravy-like broth and a lime to squeeze over the top. I could pretend that I haven’t been craving Tsujita’s tsukemen since the moment I first tasted it, but I would be lying. Known for being warm, comforting, and familiar, Westerners often oversimplify the complexity of ramen, assuming the modest noodle dish is just one thing. But even within the vast culinary landscape of Los Angeles, there are endless styles, techniques, and regional varieties of ramen available to the hungry Angeleno. From traditional Hakata-style tonkotsu to a shiitake miso-based vegan ramen, here are five different styles and regional ramen varieties to try in Los Angeles. For approximately 14 weeks, seven different ramen concepts represented a variety of regional ramen types (including Tokyo, Kumamoto, Fukushima, and Yokohama), as well as other ramen styles popular throughout the nation.
“I understand their passion and I understand their sadness and I understand their anger,” Engelhart told The Times. “I had the same views of the world that they did before I shifted my ideas based on my experience in farming, and I have compassion for what they’re feeling. Their short time frame and low pricing mean you're not out a lot in time or money if you don't love it as much as you hoped. These shorter sailings cater heavily to first-time cruisers and Florida locals who can book on short notice and drive into the port for a quick escape. It's a look that carries over to a bevy of high-end eateries, including Nama, a new-for-Norwegian sushi restaurant with a design that is as sophisticated as the sushi it serves. Also striking is the look of a version of Le Bistro, Norwegian's signature French eatery, that can be found on both of these vessels. Both of the spaces are built around three massive crystal chandeliers costing nearly $100,000 that hang down to the floor — a showstopper of a design element. What Does Alpha Alpha Alpha Mean on a Cruise Ship?
It’s important to note that the use of “Alpha Alpha” may vary slightly between different cruise lines or even ships within the same cruise line. While “Alpha Alpha” is typically used to refer to the first muster station, other letters of the phonetic alphabet may be used to designate additional muster stations on larger ships. In this case, “Alpha Alpha” represents the letter A, which is the first letter of the alphabet. Therefore, it is used to indicate the first muster station on the ship. One reason for this is that cruise ships draw inspiration from nautical traditions, incorporating terms commonly used in the maritime world.

On a cruise, “Code Purple” is used to signify a bomb threat or some other form of chemical or biological threat. If you hear it, you’ll probably be a bit scared, but try not to panic, the crew will have robust procedures in place to deal with it. Vessel emergency codes
There are many codes you may hear on a cruise ship, but in reality, you will rarely hear most of them. This is a very serious incident, and the ship may also sound its horn three times which would give a wider indication that there was an onboard emergency to other nearby ships as well. Code Gray alerts the crew to the presence of an abusive person or a combative person on board. I’m sure it won’t be you but do remember to be respectful to your crew and fellow cruise travellers at all times. The emergency codes you're not supposed to know about - The Telegraph
The emergency codes you're not supposed to know about.
The Code Alpha lets crew members know that someone needs medical help without causing panic. Some codes, though, are almost universal, and they're most likely the ones you really don't want to hear. It could be minor, "such as someone threw up on the pool deck, crewman with mop and bucket to attend". On the other hand it might signal something far more serious, such as the announcement "Mr Mob", or "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar", the signal for "Man overboard".
Whether you’re taking a themed cruise, singles cruise or all-inclusive trip, listen for these terms the next time you hit the high seas. Crew members will take care of the dead person’s body, which will be stored in the cruise ship’s morgue until the vessel reaches land. “Delta, Delta, Delta” is often used by crew members as a secret alert that there’s been an accident that caused damage to the ship. These codes mean that a less serious issue has arisen and is easily solvable by the crew members. Sometimes there are crew drills in port..so you MAY hear one of these and you may see life boats launched, or dummies (as in fake people) thrown overboard,etc... As for delays, the International Air Transport Association has dozens of codes that explain the exact nature of the problem.
Secret Codes On Cruise Ships Explained
Cruise line policies on secret codes can also vary when it comes to less serious issues. For instance, while Code Green may indicate a less serious issue on one cruise line, it may mean something different on another. It’s worth noting that while less serious issues may not require immediate action, it’s still important to pay attention to any announcements or instructions from the crew. Are you ready to set sail and unlock the secrets of the high seas? As a seasoned cruiser, I’ve always been intrigued by the secret codes used by crew members on board. It’s like being part of a secret club, where only those in the know can understand the mysterious messages being broadcasted over the ship’s PA system.
I hope my article hasn’t made you anxious about your cruise, as that certainly wasn’t my intention. Remember that it’s unlikely that you’ll hear most, if any, of these cruise codes during your cruise, but it’s always worth being in the know about what they mean. Similar to “Code Green”, the ship’s captain might use the cruise code “Code Yellow” to alert the crew to a less serious issue. The traffic light analogy holds up, with yellow (similar to amber) being nothing serious to worry about. You should be briefed on this during your muster drill as it’s important that you to take action.
What Does Code Pink Mean on a Cruise Ship?
Below each is the action the crew and passengers should take in response. It’s important to note that different cruise lines may use different codes for certain emergencies. For instance, Alpha Alpha Alpha is the code for a medical emergency on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships. As you can see, they make a point of repeating the secret code word three times which makes them different from most other cruise lines. A code Kilo or specifically “Kilo, Kilo, Kilo” on Royal Caribbean ships signifies to crew to get to assigned emergency posts.
The utilization of “Alpha Alpha” contributes to the overall safety and security onboard cruise ships. It promotes clear communication, a sense of unity, and a standardized approach to emergency preparedness. Passengers who familiarize themselves with their assigned muster stations and follow the instructions provided significantly contribute to their own safety and the safety of others on board. The common usage of “Alpha Alpha” on cruise ships reflects its importance in ensuring a coordinated and organized response in case of an emergency. By using a standardized term, such as “Alpha Alpha,” cruise lines ensure that passengers quickly and efficiently locate their assigned muster stations and receive vital safety information. My experience has allowed me to understand the significance of these codes and the importance they hold in ensuring the safety and security of the crew and passengers.

And don’t forget to check your email to confirm and view all your upcoming cruises. Some cruise lines will use “Operation Bright Star” in this scenario. When the captain or a crew member says it, it’s like an announcement for other crew members to take the right measurements to help whoever’s in trouble. Again, if you happen to hear it on your cruise vacation, the best course of action is to keep your composure and listen for any important instructions.
